Polestar Design is an architectural design firm that applies a deep understanding of building systems new and old to create site-specific homes and to reimagine existing buildings down to the finest detail.
For more than a decade, Polestar’s principal, Chris Herlihy, worked as a carpenter and woodworker, learning design and construction from the ground up before becoming the third generation in his family to pursue a career in architectural design. Since 2010, Herlihy has worked as a lead designer and project manager in the greater Portland area. In 2018, Herlihy launched his own firm, Polestar Design, with a focus on transformative residential design and an emphasis on efficient, informed dialogue with the craftspeople who make it a reality.

We minimize inefficient back and forth with contractors through clear directives that understand the work on the ground and utilize the expertise of every crew member and craftsperson to realize the client’s vision. Our homes are light-filled and airy, with clean lines and optimal flow and function. Our historic renovations retain elements of the original design coupled with modern elements that are as livable as they are beautiful. Throughout, we prioritize a low environmental impact that reuses existing housing stock whenever possible.
